A participatory installation with an old variety of pole bean, 2021 and 2023
by Piero Good
Plant Breeding Club are multi-part works. The first part includes the cultivation of the beans and the installation in the Galerie Kriens (2021) and the Galerie Luciano Fasciati in Chur (2023). The second part is still undefined: it is about the life of the beans in new places.
For the first part, gardeners grew the local pole beans "Von Ennetbürgen" (2021) and "Forelle aus Thusis" (2023) over the summer. The beans were not harvested. In autumn, when the plants and their pods had dried, we dug them up together with the roots. For the duration of the exhibition, the whole plants floated in the exhibition space. Visitors were invited to cut off a pod containing beans - in other words the seeds for the next generation of the plants - from the exhibited plants and take them home in the envelope provided. The envelope contained various information on the cultivation and propagation of the runner bean, information on ProSpecieRara and seed policy, as well as a request to document your own cultivation of the plant.
